What is care work? Care is about knowing the client, their likes/dislikes, engaging in their past life and experiences, developing a rapport that enables recognition of small changes, so you can adapt support. It’s also about maintaining dignity and respect. Care’s more than a job, it’s a vocation.

Is it hard work? Yes – but knowing you’ve made a real difference in someone’s life makes it all worth-while. There’s nothing like the feeling of a thank you from the client/their family.

Does it involve weekends? Yes – most clients need some support every day.

Some are early risers; hence the 7am start – to help them get up, showered, give medication, breakfast etc; i.e. fairly minor support. Calls during the day may be for just a chat, to make a cuppa or do some domestic tasks. Not all of our clients are early to bed – hence we work until 10pm. And yes, some of our clients have a much greater need for support.

Is previous experience essential? No…what you need is:

  • a passion to make a positive difference in peoples’ lives
  • a commitment to being a reliable team member – someone who your colleagues and our clients can depend on.
  • full driving licence and use of a reliable car is preferable, although some of our team walk between clients.
  • for you to live in, or close to, either Church Stretton or Craven Arms
  • able to work at least 16 hours a week, including alternate weekends; 00/7.30 am starts and/or 9.30/10.00pm finishes.

We work in teams covering the hours of 7am – 2pm and 4pm – 10pm; 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. Our Carers work anything from three to six hours at a time, depending on their circumstances and the requirements of our clients.

Full DBS checks are carried out on all staff and two references obtained.

New Dawn Care Covid Vaccination update

New Dawn Care continues to keep all staff and clients safe, as they have throughout the pandemic.

We’re close to 90% of our staff vaccinated; and are hugely appreciative of their positive response to the vaccination programme – despite having to travel to the vaccine centre. The majority of our clients have also had their first vaccine.

Despite this initial vaccine, all our carers will continue, for the foreseeable future; to wear masks, gloves and aprons at all calls; and put on either goggles or face shields whilst carrying out any personal care.

We are committed to taking all reasonable steps to ensure the health and safety of all our service users and staff.

New Dawn publishes Winter Plan

In preparation for winter, we have been recruiting new staff, so as to increase our business resilience.

CQC – latest summary 28 July 2020

The CQC are only inspecting services requiring support; otherwise they are maintaining contact through ‘engagement and support’ phone calls. These calls are covering:

  • Safe Care and Treatment
  • Staffing arrangements
  • Protection from Abuse
  • Assurance Processes, Monitoring and Risk Management

On 28 July, the Inspector spoke with Rachel Wintle, Registered Manager. The written Summary was really positive; especially the conclusion that

“…New Dawn are managing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic”. They also commented that:

“…medicines are being managed safely and effectively”

“….you are working hard to keep service users and staff safe and you have ensured their views were valued and responded to. Well done to all of you.”

CQC Inspection – Update

Prior to covid-19, companies rated as requires improvement would normally have had a return inspection within a maximum of 12 months.

With the arrival of the pandemic, the CQC have paused their routine inspections. Instead they have introduced an Emergency Support Framework whereby they periodically check-in with providers by phone; to determine whether they ‘need support’, ‘are managing’ or whether an emergency inspection is required.

We have kept our clients and staff safe during the pandemic and are pleased to say that the CQC confirmed we are in their ‘managing’ category. The only downside of this is we do not know when we will next get a chance to demonstrate the improvements we have made and to be re-assessed.

Hence, we remain with a ‘requires improvement’ rating. This related specifically to the area of medication management as it was identified that we had not always met the standards of care required. There was no suggestion whatsoever that any harm had been caused. We took immediate action to remedy the shortcomings. We introduced new procedures, and trained staff in their use; as well as bringing in new checks and audits. All of which have remained in place, despite the extra pressures of managing within the unprecedented circumstances created by covid-19.

Whilst being extremely disappointed at the findings, we were pleased at the number of positives the CQC noted within their last report – including:

…client’s outcomes were consistently good… they were supported with dignity and respect and involved in their care… their needs were met through good organisation and care

…staff received regular training, supervision and appraisals

…staff spoke positively about the leadership and support provided by the Registered Manager and said that the company has positive and caring values; ‘we enjoy working here’

…the service had effective systems in place to ensure staff received handovers of the latest information on clients

…clients described ‘professional but close and friendly relationships with staff’ – ‘I think this bit where we sit and chat is an important part of my care package and I really enjoy it

they have been very responsive to my needs and really understand my condition

‘…clients and relatives said they were regularly asked for their feedback and that this was acted on

…the service had received a number of written compliments from clients and relatives e.g.‘it was evident to see that they consider their role as a vocation rather than a job and this was refreshing and heart-warming to see’

…effective systems were in place to investigate and respond to complaints. No complaints had been received since our last inspection

At New Dawn Care Agency, we deliver bespoke care in clients’ homes. We aim for our clients to have a regular team so Carers and clients get to know each other. Carers participate in care plans, as they understand the people they support; and so come up with innovative ideas to maintain quality of life, preserve dignity and ensure we are responsive at all times; and ideally exceed expectations.

We are recruiting Carers to work in Craven Arms, Church Stretton and the surrounding areas. Our usual shift patterns are 7am to 2pm and 4pm to 10pm, including alternate weekends. Full driving licence and use of a reliable car is preferable, although some of our team just work in-town and walk between clients.

Full CRB/DBS checks are carried out on all staff and two references obtained.
